How To Read Kentucky Derby Odds
Understanding how to read Kentucky Derby odds (or any horse racing odds) isn't too complicated at all. The odds are displayed in a format such as 20-1, 6-5, 1-2, etc., which are easy to calculate once you learn the basics. These numbers show you the amount of profit you will make and the size of the bet you will need to place in order to receive that profit.
Using our first 20-1 odds example this shows us that you will earn $20 in profit for every $1 you bet (most tracks are a minimum $2 bet, so this would work out to be $40 in profits for every $2 bet.
Using our second 6-5 odds example this shows us that you will earn $6 in profit for every $5 you bet. 6-5 odds would be slightly above receiving one to one on your money.
Our third 1-2 odds example shows us that you will earn $1 in profit for every $2 you bet. These are odds you will see on heavily favored horses, as the bet is paying out less then one to one on your money.
The odds are not always listed exactly, as they are usually rounded down for display purposes. If you were betting $2 on a 10-1 horse instead of winning $20 you may win $20.40 because the real odds may have been 10.2-1.
With the Kentucky Derby, and all horse races, it is important to realize that the odds are changing from the action of the bettors. The more public money there is on a horse the lower horses odds will be. Odds can change all the way up to post time, causing for a lot of shifts in the odds right before a race is set to begin.
When you place a wager on a horse, the odds displayed when you made your bet are not the actual odds you will be paid out on. The final odds determined are used for all wagers, regardless of what the odds were set at when you placed your bet.
For example, let's say that you placed a bet on the morning of the Kentucky Derby race. You picked a horse that was listed at 10-1 for winning the Kentucky Derby at the time of submitting your bet. As the race got closer to start time a lot of other people also liked that horse and a ton of public money was bet on that horse. The action from the bettors lowered this horses odds down to 4-1 by post time. Even though the odds displayed 10-1 when you purchased your wager ticket, you will always be paid for the final odds, which in this case were 4-1. This is one of the most important things for horse betting that a lot of beginners don't realize.
