Kentucky Derby Betting
The 136th Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday May 1st, 2010 at Churchill Downs, Louisville Kentucky. Post time for the event is 6:15 PM EST, and the TV coverage will start at 5:00 PM EST on NBC. For those who are new to horse betting we will explain exactly how you can bet on the Kentucky Derby.
The most common type of horse betting for the Kentucky Derby is betting on a pony to win, place or show. Win of course meaning the horse wins the Kentucky Derby, place means the horse places first or second, and show means the horse placing either first, second or third place in the race. Of course picking a horse to win will have higher odds (payout more) then picking a horse to show.
Each horse will have different betting odds placed on them depending on their odds on placing well in the Kentucky Derby. The favored horses, or the horses most likely to win will have lower odds on them, while the longshots will have higher odds and bigger payouts.
There is a little bit of common sense involved with betting on a horse race such as the Kentucky Derby, but there isn't too much strategy involved. It wouldn't be too smart to bet on a horse that is favored to win the Derby to show, as the payout would be very small and probably not worth the risk. On the other hand, picking a longshot to show might have a rewarding payout.
Other types of Kentucky Derby betting include Quinella, Exacta, Trifect, and Superfecta betting, which are called exotic bets. All of these types of bets include picking the order of finish in the race of at least two horses. These have bigger payouts, and are my personal favorite ways to bet on Kentucky Derby races, or any other big horse race.
A quinella and exacta horse bet are very similar. When making a quinella bet you will need to choose the two horses who will finish first and second. As long as those two horses finishes in the top two positions you will win your bet (doesn't matter the order). With an exacta bet you will also choose which two horses place first and second, but you will need to predict the exact order they finish in order to win your bet.
Trifecta and Superfecta betting are also very popular bets for the Kentucky Derby, and can make for some huge winnings. Trifecta betting is choosing the top three horses in order of finish. There are a variety of different trifecta bets you can place which allow you to pick combination's of finishes. The Superfecta is basically the same as trifecta betting, but involves picking the top four horses. In 2005 the trifecta Kentucky Derby bet paid $133,000 on a $2 bet!
